1. What Are Cookies?
Cookies are small text files placed on your device when you visit a website. They help the website remember your preferences, maintain your session, and improve your experience. Cookies may be set by the website you are visiting ("first-party cookies") or by third-party services embedded in the site ("third-party cookies").
2. How We Use Cookies
SafeSentry uses strictly necessary cookies only. We do not use advertising cookies, social media tracking cookies, or third-party marketing cookies.
3. Cookies We Use
3.1 Strictly Necessary Cookies
These cookies are essential for the Service to function. They cannot be disabled.
| Cookie Name | Purpose | Duration | Type |
|---|---|---|---|
| next-auth.session-token | Maintains your authenticated session after login. Without this cookie, you would need to log in on every page. | Session / 30 days | First-party, HttpOnly, Secure |
| next-auth.csrf-token | Protects against Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF) attacks during authentication. | Session | First-party, HttpOnly, Secure |
| next-auth.callback-url | Remembers the page you were trying to access before being redirected to the login page. | Session | First-party, HttpOnly, Secure |
| cookie-consent | Records your acceptance of this cookie policy so the consent banner is not shown again. | 365 days | First-party |
3.2 Local Storage
In addition to cookies, we use browser local storage for:
- Theme preference: Remembering your light/dark mode selection
- UI state: Sidebar collapse state and other layout preferences
Local storage data remains on your device and is not transmitted to our servers.
4. Cookies We Do NOT Use
For clarity, SafeSentry does not use:
- Third-party advertising or remarketing cookies (e.g. Google Ads, Facebook Pixel)
- Social media tracking cookies
- Cross-site tracking cookies
- Fingerprinting or device identification technologies for marketing purposes
5. Managing Cookies
Since we only use strictly necessary cookies, consent is not required under PECR Regulation 6. However, you can control cookies through your browser settings:
- Chrome: Settings → Privacy and Security → Cookies
- Firefox: Settings → Privacy & Security → Cookies and Site Data
- Safari: Preferences → Privacy → Manage Website Data
- Edge: Settings → Cookies and Site Permissions
Note: Blocking or deleting our essential cookies will prevent you from logging in and using the Service.
6. Legal Basis
Under the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR) 2003 (as amended), strictly necessary cookies are exempt from consent requirements because they are essential for the service you have requested. We rely on this exemption for all cookies listed above.
7. Changes to This Policy
If we introduce new types of cookies (e.g. analytics or marketing cookies), we will update this policy and seek your consent where required before deploying them.
